Looks now like everything is okay, after another day of frantically
reloading/installing the TechTool update version 4.0.5 - - - and also
reloading/installing the earlier versions of TechTool starting with
version 4.0.3

(explanation - full CD version 4.0.3 has to be installed, then both the
updates, in order to get to version 4.0.5)

I do not know what caused the original set of symptoms.

Possibly a "soft" RAM failure. According to IBM, the RAM in our
computers does not last forever. IBM claims that RAM life is about 7
years with 24/7 operation.

See:

....and look at section "4." on that page starting with:
"SDRAM Errors are fairly rare......"

I myself have had a _lot_ of cases here where unexplained corruption
occurs. Most of the time when I run lengthy RAM tests (hours long) -
- - the test "passes", however on rare occassions "good" RAM testing
shows up a bad RAM module.
(I use the free "memtest" in single-user mode)

In any case, I retract my original post. The latest TechTool update
version 4.0.5 now 'plays nice' with all the other 8.5 GBs of stuff I
have in my 20 GB Tiger partition.
(version 10.4.2 including the most recent security update)

Sorry for all the fuss and feathers I raised with my original post.
