Nested remote desktop sessions are causing problems

Hello,
I am quite new to the macintosh platform in general. I am a System
Administrator for both a UNIX and Windows environment and have
previously been stuck to XP and Redhat for my desktop environments. XP
has many features that I have grown used to and Redhat has some
limitations that I've been unable to work around. So, I decided to try
a Mac thinking it might be the best of both worlds. So far, I'm quite
impressed and have been able to do most of what I need. I have noticed
a small problem however that could be a show stopper for me and force
me back to XP on the desktop; To manage my Windows boxes I have to use
Microsoft's remote desktop client and in fact I must be able to nest
multiple sessions because we do all of our maintenance from an isolated
network into our dedicated customer networks. So, when coming in from
home I open a session to a server at the office, then from there
another session into our dedicated management network, then again into
a customer network. What I find is that when using the remote desktop
client for mac (downloaded from Microsoft) I can only use the first
session and occasionally the second but the third hop in is basically
unuseable. This works fine when using an XP client. The biggest problem
is that when entering passwords, the capital letters or special
characters aren't properly interpreted. I find that if I release and
re-press the shift key prior to each capital or special character it
will work. This seems like a possible bandwidth or key repeat rate
issue but I can't be sure. The mouse also seems very slow and almost
unresponsive in the second and third session in. We have a citrix
gateway into our network as well and I have had the same results with
that and nesting RDP sessions beyond it so I'm fairly certain it's not
the client itself. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also, when using the Mac in general, I find that the mouse is a little
bit jerky, I've messed with the mouse settings in the control panel but
not had much luck. Is there a way to increase the mouse responsiveness
and key repeat rate on the keyboard?

Thanks,
Dan.
