Tiger on G4 Tower will not boot - Suggestions wanted

I have been running OS 10.4.2 on a g4 tower for the last 3 weeks.
several days ago it refused to boot. I keep getting that gray screen
with you must restart your computer. When this happens is not always
consistant. Sometime it is immediate, sometimes it occurs after the
desktop is visible or anytime in between.

I tried to start the computer with a firewire drive with a pristine
system the same problem.

I f I put the tower into target mode I can load the system with no
difficulties into the receiving computer, so it is not the software.

Any thoughts would be mot appreciated.
