can't debug large CFM in CW8

A coworker has had a problem with CodeWarrior for a long time: he can't
debug larger CFM apps. He's using CodeWarrior 8.3 on Mac OS X 10.3 on
an older dual G4. He can build and debug the small sample apps, but
when he tries to debug one of our larger apps (700+ files in the
project), the spinning cursor appears, the project window says it's
loading debugging data, and then it apparently gives up without issuing
any sort of error message. The IDE seems unstable after that too; I saw
it give odd error messages and then crash if you tried to, e.g. modify
target settings. We've tried starting with a clean install of the OS,
creating a new user account to run with, installing CodeWarrior fresh
or copying it from another machine that works, all to no avail. We
tried adding RAM so it had more than my machine (which works), and that
didn't help either. Does anybody have any ideas on what could cause
this, or any suggestions for what else might need changing?
