Hi, I wonder if you can help me. I want to buy an Epson that does all
the following?
Out of curiosity, why specifically an Epson?
Hi Gregory, the reason I say an Epson is because historically I have
always used Macs and Epsons were the only printers around that you
could use on a Mac or a PC.
That is a rather inaccurate observation.
Most printers from Canon, Epson, Brother and HP (and probably a few
other brands too) will work on both a Mac and PC, and have done for many
years.
Back in the pre-USB (Mac OS 8) era, it was certainly common to find a
large number of printers that were Windows-only, but after the Mac
embraced USB, and especially after the introduction of Mac OS X, it has
been a lot easier to find Mac-compatible printers.
Nowadays most of them work, but the usual exceptions apply: some low-end
printers are only supplied with Windows drivers and there aren't any Mac
drivers available. I've noticed this most often with HP LaserJet
printers, where the cheapest model is Windows only while the
second-cheapest one also works on a Mac.
You should just look carefully at the specifications on the box (or
online) for any printer you are considering, and confirm that it
supports a Mac, and your version of Mac OS. In some cases they only
mention an older version of Mac OS X (e.g. "10.1.5"). This generally
means the printer will work with later versions as well.
I now use both computer types but still want to print of my portable Mac
more than the PC. However, I would be really grateful, as I know printers
have moved on a bit if there is anything out there that suffices for my
spec in my original email.
Quoting that again:
printing onto matte heavyweight paper,
has separate colour cartridges
good resolution 1440 by 5650 (cannot remember the exact number)
preferable under £100
I do not know which one to buy? I am currently using an Epson R1800
A3+ format printer but this is a little expensive on the ink for the
run of the mill stuff.
I have read about an Epson R200 and I am interested in this one as it
also does panoramic printing, but I wonder if this is an old model
type and if there is anything newer around.
The main thing is that I use canvas grain paper that is definitely
heavyweight and I need a printer that is robust to handle this paper
weight. Your help would be much appreciated.
One thing you haven't mentioned that we might need to know is which Mac
model you are using, and which version of Mac OS you are running.
If you are still running Mac OS 9 (or earlier) you may find that there
are few current printer models available which will work with it. Mac OS
9 was phased out about five or six years ago and is no longer supported
by most application and driver developers.
If you are running an earlier version of Mac OS X you may find similar
problems. Anything older than 10.3.9 is rapidly running out of supported
software, and there is a signficant amount which now requires 10.4 (or a
subsequent free update).
