Re: Accessing printer connected to ethernet print server

Thanks all for the help. I finally got this thing working.
For the record, here are the steps I followed:

1. Install gutenprint 5.0 from the site noted previously in this
thread.

2. Upgrade the firmware to version 2.13 on the EDIMAX BR-6104KP.
Firmware files are available on EDIMAX's web site, on the downloads
page. Upgrading the firmware is done through the web configuration
tool for the router. The router has a built in web server. You open
the configuration page by entering "http://192.168.2.1"; in the URL box
on a web browser. Navigate to Tools, then Firmware Upgrade.

3. Open the Printer Setup Utility (in /Applications/Utilities).

4. Press the Add tool, then in the Printer Browser dialog, press the
IPP printing icon

5. From the Protocol drop down box, select "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP"

6. Enter 192.168.2.1 in the Address field. This IP address is the router/print server's default address.

7. In the Queue field, enter "lpt1". This is for a printer attached
to the USB1 port. Actually, this queue name is configurable.

Navigate to the Print Server configuration page in the web interface
for the router. There, you can enter names for "Port Name 1" and "Port
Name 2".

These are actually the names of the printer queues for printers
attached to USB1 and USB2, respectively. Why they aren't labeled
that way, and why this isn't stated in the manual, is one of the
many mysteries of world of technical documentation.

8. A message appears momentarily at the bottom of the Print Browser
dialog stating: "gathering printer information". Then, "Generic
PostScript Printer" appears in the "Print Using:" field. This is not a
postscript printer, so that needs to be changed. Click the drop down
box and enter HP. Then select "HP Laserjet 1012 ..." from the list.
(This printer, along with many other new ones, comes with gutenprint 5.0.)

Hopefully, this will save someone out there some time fiddling with
this stuff.
