Accessing printer connected to ethernet print server

I have an ethernet router with built in USB print server. The model
is EDIMAX BR-6104KP:
http://www.edimax.nl/html/english/products/BR-6104KP.htm
The print server on this thing supports both IPP and LPR protocols.
I have an HP 1012 connected to it through one of its USB ports,
which is designated lpt1 on the print server.
I've been fooling around trying to connect to this printer from
OS X Tiger, but without success. When I attempt to add the printer
using the printer setup utility, I click on the IPP printer icon.
The print server's address ip appears in the address field. At the
bottom of the dialog, a message appears: "gathering printer
information". After a moment, "Generic PostScript Printer" appears
in the "Print Using:" field. This is not a postscript printer,
so it seems something is not right. When connecting locally,
the printer appears as "hp Laserjet 2.0". I can try to set the
printer model directly, but HP Laserjet 1012 is not a choice.
When I try to print, the print queue monitor shows the file being
sent, then a message appears: "Control file sent successfully".
After that, a progress bar keeps moving, but nothing ever happens.
Is there a more manual way to hook up this printer?
Any ideas?
