I recently purchased a Dell 1815 all-in-one. The software installation
seemed to go fine. I have the 1815dn option available in the Printer
Setup Utility.

The duplex printing options (labeled Two Sided Printing) in the Layout
portion of the print dialog box are greyed out. I can see the radio
buttons labeled "Off", "Long-Edge Binding" and "Short Edge Binding" but
haven't been able to find a way to 'activate' them.

I've opened a ticket with Dell, but they have not been helpful.

Today I installed the driver for a HP 3390 and tried printing with that
device. Very same thing happened. The duplex options are there in the
print dialog box, but still greyed out.

This makes it look to me like it's not a problem with the drivers but
something else going on. Any suggestions?

I have an HP 6830 networked printer with no duplex capability. The
duplex options in the Layout panel show up grayed out, exactly as you
see. This leads me to suspect that the printer software doesn't know
about the duplex option. If you open the Printer Setup Utility (the
system utility), highlight your 1815, click the blue Info button, then
select Installable Options from the pulldown menu, do you see the duplex
option? I'm thinking I've had to do this with some HP printers at work
to enable duplex printing.

Another place you may be able to enable this is through the CUPS
interface <http://localhost:631>. You'll need your short username and
password to make changes, but if you poke around in the Printer
Configuration options, you might be able to turn on duplex printing.
