Odd range printing bug OSX inkjet

My daughter encountered a problem under OSX 10.4.2 with printing just
one or a few pages in multi page documents she'd created with Appleworks
6.29. Same problem seems to be present in other applications too
(although she did not specify which other applications).
Problem does not seem to be the orphaned Appleworks 6.29.
Problem seems to also be present with printing on this same printer via
PRINTER SHARING from other G4 Macs.
I am using:
3 different G4 macs 450 933 & 1.25MHz iMac
10.4.2 (older 450 has 10.3.4)
HP Photosmart 7660 connected via USB 1.1 built in on the 933 QuickSilver
G4 Mac.
When she wants to just print a selected page or range of pages in
Appleworks 6.29 the printer dialog simply won't let her change, delete
or modify the page range numbers in any way. For a while it worked if
she QUIT Appleworks and restarted again but later had problems with that
and has had to resort to weird modifications of her documents before she
was able to reprint just one or a few pages again.
I had an older HP driver install (I think labeled 2.72 version) under
earlier OSX version. When I installed Tiger I let it install the
default HP printer driver. ALthough the printer seemed to be working
fine otherwise, this is when the problem was noticed and brought to my
(Dad the computer tech support person)attention.
I then downloaded Feb 3 2006 and installed from HP webpage a suggested
installer for 7660 PhotoSmart printer version 3.1 which in the end
installed what is identified as 2.71 version driver.
Same problem.

Workaround:
experimenting, I have discovered, if I choose PRINT, and can't change
the page range, if I click EITHER:
1) SUPPLIES which goes to a Safari page to order printing supplies and
just QUIT that.
2) PDF and choose EDIT MENU then CANCEL
On once more launching PRINT I can THEN edit or change the page range
numbers.
Weird and I have no solution other than this workaround (which I found
only by extended experimentation).

Thanks for any comments or advice.
