So can anyone explain (1) why a folder that is perfectly visible on the originating computer becomes invisible on the receiving one; and why (2) the folder can't be opened even once it is found, even though its contents appear to be OK?
how about having a look it by doing an ls -lAe in a terminal for the
downloads folder, post the output here.
Thanks for this suggestion, and sorry to have taken so long to act on it (a visitor arrived at more or less the time I was having the problem, and it's taken a while to get back to it).
The relevant line in the terminal output is
drwxr-xr-x 50 athel_cb wheel 1700 Dec 17 14:08 HTML files
I tried transferring several folders today. All of those that became invisible have lines that start with
drwxr-xr-x
and continue with
wheel
However, there are plenty of others that have the same characteristics and can be opened in the ordinary way.
All the files today were being transfered from a MacBook Air running 10.5.5 to a G5 running 10.4.11, but all were written on an Aluminum in the Classic environment. I've not had ay trouble transferring files written in OS X.
