System Preferences -> User -> Starting Objects (or whatever it's called

"Login Items"
well, I went there, and did not see any item relating to Microtek Scanner
Finder. There is iTunes Helper and SpeechSynthesisServer, however.
Are you absolutely sure nothing is in System Preferences > Accounts >
Login Items?:

Thanks for your efforts, Jolly Roger, but as I had replied to an earlier post
on this, I go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items, and the screen
shows me two items, iTunes Helper and SpeechSynthesisServer. I am the sole
user of this computer and so am not aware of any other accounts on this
machine. Additionally, the link you provided seems to show that at least one
other person has this same event happening with his computer.
Hi Tom.
I don't have an answer to your question, but I can confirm that you
aren't crazy. Someone gave me a MicroTek scanner, and I observed the
same annoyance of it launching the Microtek Scanner Finder application
at login.
I was also unable to work out how it was doing this. It wasn't a login
item. In the end, I deleted the application when I decided the scanner
was a piece of junk, so the problem was resolved but without
understanding the mechanism.
I think I even examined its installer in an effort to work out what it
was installing which might cause this, and didn't spot anything obvious.
The only conclusion I could draw is that there is yet another mechanism
for launching applications which I don't know about.
FWIW, I have done a "find" on my computer and have found a file called
"com.microtek.scanner.finder.plist" in my (user)/library/Preferences folder.
(am unsure if my notation is correct in the last sentence, am hoping you can
see my intent)
I do not know exactly what this .plist file is, but google tells me it is a
kind of preferences file. Much of the rest of the article was unintelligible
to me.
All the .plist files ("property list") contain preferences for particlar
applications. They aren't responsible for anything like launching an
application - they are just read by the application after it has been
launched, to fetch preference choices made by the user (typically via
the "Preferences" command in the application menu), and are written by
the application when preferences are changed.
If you delete this file, the application will normally create it again
on next launch, containing default preferences.
The rest of the system doesn't pay attention to the .plist files, but
there are some developer tools for examining and editing them.
