Sharing iTunes library and database files

I know I can share my library in a network (the library would reside on a server) keeping separate library files on each machine.
How about sharing the database files, too? No, I don't want to sync them among the different machines, but I'd like to keep the files where the library is and simply reference it from each machine.
For that to work I'd have to make sure that the library is always available on each machine at the same path. Currently in my database file(s) a library entry is referenced as file://localhost/Users/<my-user-name>/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/.
Couldn't I create a separate volume on the server, mount it there, tell iTunes to us that volume for the library, and auto-mount (NFS!?) that volume on each machine? How would iTunes behave? I can pretty much guarantee that no two machines would write to the library at the same time. Only the server would write and all other machines would read...
Any hints as for how to make this work?
