I am using a G4 iMac, sys 10.4.11 and QuickTime Pro 7.5. I have some .avi
movie files with a sound track on them, but I now get no sound. I play a
copy
of the same .avi movie files on my wife's computer, and the sound plays
perfectly. I downloaded and installed a fresh copy of QTPro 7.5 on my
computer, and still not able to get the sound track to play. The A/V
controls
panel for these .avi files shows the audio section grayed out. ?? When I
play
.mov files, the sound plays normally. I tried exporting an .avi file to
.mov
format, and the sound would not play on the (converted) file. What the
heck... I exported a .mov file to .avi... and the sound played.
A friend of mine just had almost exactly the same problem. In his case,
.flv files wouldn't play sound any more. This started immediately after
he had installed QuickTime 7.5.
Analysis revealed my first guess was right: he had an old version of
Perian installed, which was no longer compatible with QuickTime 7.5.
Downloading and installing the current version of Perian (1.1) brought
the sound back again.
If you have Perian installed, it has a pane in System Preferences (looks
like a red pocketknife), which tells you the version number, gives you a
means to install and remove the Perian codec, and a button to check for
updated versions. If you are running something older than 1.1 then
update it.
If you don't have Perian installed at all, then you must have previously
been using something else to allow playback of AVI files, and whatever
it was is no longer compatible with QuickTime 7.5. The easiest solution
is to download and install Perian, which you can get from
http://www.perian.org.
Thank you for your reply. QT is the only movie player I've ever used for
these particular movie files, and QT7.5 was working not so terribly long ago.
I do not know what Perian is.
