Is anyone else with Supernews finding something terribly disheartening
happened today? I woke up to find that:
1. There are absolutely *no* new posts in comp.sys.mac.*. That can't be
right.
2. alt.comp.lang.applescript suddenly has 727 unread posts. I *know*
that's not right.
3. When attempting to open alt.comp.lang.applescript, MT-NewsWatcher
reports this error:
An error occurred when NewsWatcher tried to send a
command to your news server.
NewsWatcher sent the following command:
XHDR newsgroups 92149-92819
The server sent the following response:
503 unsupported header field
4. If I turn off filtering in MT-NewsWatcher, I am able to open
alt.comp.lang.applescript, and it now shows posts going back to 6/5/2007
marked unread!
5. I notice a *lot* of those old unread posts in
alt.comp.lang.applescript are SPAM that Supernews normally would have
deleted automatically!
As some of you may know, Giganews purchased Supernews not long ago. It
appears Giganews has stopped indexing header fields in the Supernews
overview.fmt databases, which means those of us who use news clients
that depend on that indexing for filtering can no longer filter on most
headers! If this is true, it's what I consider the death of a terrific
news provider!
This is a sad day!

Please send all responses to the relevant news group. E-mail sent to
this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM filter. I do not
read posts from Google Groups. Use a real news reader if you want me to
see your posts.

I'm having no problems.

Dear Supernews Customers,
Due to the recent transition of our services to a new Usenet backend
provider,
minor housekeeping is necessary to ensure that you continue receiving
newsgroup
headers without interruption.
Specifically, on March 31, 2008, newsgroup header numbering will be reset to
match that of our new backend services. On that date, you will be able to
easily
make this transition by simply purging and reloading the headers of the
subscribed newsgroups in your news client. Instructions for conducting this
action in various news clients are included at the end of this email. If
your
preferred client is not included, please refer to the specific help
documentation for the client.
These steps will be all that you need to follow to continue accessing
Supernews
without issue. Details such as the server address, username and password
will
not need to be changed or updated.
If you encounter any issues purging and reloading headers, or with any other
aspect of your Supernews service, please do not hesitate to contact our
support
department.
Best Regards,
Supernews Customer Service
