My employer just got me a black MacBook, which I love. I'm running OS
X 10.5.2. However, the cursor freezes from time to time, necessitating
a hard restart -- pretty ugly stuff. Installing the keyboard firmware
upgrade has made no difference. Help!

Since I installed 10.5.2 (and the Graphics update), my MacBook Pro has
twice done something very similar: a complete hard lockup. Mouse cursor
doesn't move, keyboard doesn't respond in any way (including Caps Lock
indicator), clock on the menu bar stops (I have the seconds displayed),
all applications hang, keyboard backlight is stuck in its current state.

The first time this happened, I also checked whether the network
interface was working. It wasn't. Dead as a doornail. No response to
pings or attempts to ssh into the computer.

The only way out was a forced power down (holding the power key for a
few seconds).

On neither occasion was the computer doing or running anything out of
the ordinary prior to the hang.

I've also had one kernel panic since installing 10.5.2. Given the
evidence so far, I'd say 10.5.2 is less stable (for me) than 10.5.1 - I
don't recall getting any kernel panics in 10.5.1.

I haven't ruled out third party software and/or 10.5.2 conflict with
them as a potential cause yet.

This wasn't related to the keyboard update - I installed that after the
first hang.

I couldn't see anything in the logs just before the hangs which might
have been related to it.

I ran into a different problem with the Graphics Update, but the Apple Support forums are full of people who are getting weird wake-from-sleep issues with laptops (with and without external monitors) and even kernel panics.

The solution for some is to archive and install, and then update to the latest, skipping the Leopard Graphics Updated 1.0.
