The "bizarre reason" is to make it possible for the system to launch any application you want -- or no application at all -- when you put the card in the reader. If iPhoto was to do that job, that would make no sense at all.
Which is why you have to use Safari to set a default web browser, and
Mail.app to set a default mail handler.

that's another stupid one.

how do you set firefox to be the default browser? obviously, by
launching a totally different browser, safari. it's stupid and
entirely non-obvious. and for apple mail, you have to go through the
initial setup just to be able to *get* to its preferences to disable
it.

In Firefox you can set Firefox as the default browser.
The selection is in Preferences - Main - System Defaults.

I believe the ability to choose a browser other than Safari
as the default browser in Safari preferences is a nice feature.

I am not forced to use Safari to set a default browser unless
Safari is the desired default browser.'

I've never used Mail and didn't know I had to use it to choose
the default mail handler. I set Thunderbird to handle my
POP3 servers and SMTP tasks. Thunderbird has a selection item
for making it the default mail client on startup.
