I have a PPC G4 with 1 GB of SDRAM which was installed at the time of
purchase. (Two 0.5 G in DIMM0 & DIMM1) I am getting tired of the slow
performance when using MacRar or when converting an .avi file to DVD
with Toast, so I purchased another 1 GB of RAM today (same as I already
have - two 0.5 GB SDRAM chips).
When I installed it, I rebooted and all seemed OK, but about 5 minutes
later I locked up and I mean LOCKED UP. I can only reboot, and I am
getting a long Apple script in about 4-5 languages telling me that the
PPC is in a panic and is locked up.
So I removed the extra RAM and all seems OK.
Question: what is the trick? What do I have to run in order to make my
Mac all happy with the extra RAM? Can I get some help with this one,
please? I would like to be able to use the extra HP I paid for, please.

Test the memory modules with memtest ($1.39) from
http://www.memtestosx.org/.
I'd test them in pairs. Number your modules (1 and 2 for the old ones, 3
and 4 for the new), install 1 and 2 in slots 0 and 1, and do a couple of
passes (boot in single-user mode, with Command-S, and type
/Applications/memtest/memtest all 2). It's slow, so go take a walk, read
the newspaper or do a crossword puzzle. The test should succeed. Do the
same thing with modules 3 and 4 in the same slots.
If the test fails, you can either return the two modules or try to find
which one is bad: test (1, 3) and (1,4).
If the test (3,4) succeeds, it could be the slots, so try your trusted
(1,2) in slots 3 and 4.
If that succeeds too, run a test with all the four modules: if it works,
your problem is probably not RAM related (of course, you may start with
this test). If it fails, you may have what I had a few months ago: two
modules that worked individually, but failed when put together. Keep
trying different configurations.
A week-end of tests should enlighten you. Just remember to write down
each configuration you try ([1,2,-,-], [3,4,-,-], etc) and its result.
