I have a PPC G4 with 1 GB of SDRAM which was installed at the time of
purchase. (Two 0.5 G in DIMM0 & DIMM1) I am getting tired of the slow
performance when using MacRar or when converting an .avi file to DVD
with Toast, so I purchased another 1 GB of RAM today (same as I already
have - two 0.5 GB SDRAM chips).
When I installed it, I rebooted and all seemed OK, but about 5 minutes
later I locked up and I mean LOCKED UP. I can only reboot, and I am
getting a long Apple script in about 4-5 languages telling me that the
PPC is in a panic and is locked up.
So I removed the extra RAM and all seems OK.
Question: what is the trick? What do I have to run in order to make my
Mac all happy with the extra RAM? Can I get some help with this one,
please? I would like to be able to use the extra HP I paid for, please.

Sounds like the ram is faulty. Remove the 2 sticks you were using
previously and try 1 stick at a time of the new ones. Probably only 1
is bad. Also, some 512mb sticks are single sided and some are double
sided. Sometimes computers don't like these to be mixed. Though most
Macs are not picky when it comes to ram. My bet is one of the sticks
is faulty.

Well, it should not be, because I wrote down all the data from the
Memory sub file in the "About This Mac" folder under the Apple Icon, and
since it is from the dealer who sold me the Mac and the original RAM, I
am hoping it would be compatible.

Also, when I initially booted up the Mac after installing, I did open
the "About this Mac" + "Memory" folder, and it told me I had 2 GB as
well as telling me that all DIMMs were full with identical RAM.

Very confusing?
