The Mac Operating system, OS X, provides excellent security. There is no
need for other anti-virus software, which indeed is likely to do more
harm than good.
OS X will ask you for Admin permission before installing an application
program and before launching an application program for the first time.
General advice: Do not use an Admin account for routine use. You must of
course have an Admin account on the machine, but create another
non-admin account for your routine use.
Also check your firewall settings. If you do not have a Firewall router,
your Mac firewall should be on. Go to System Preferences >> Sharing and
select the Firewall tab. See the Help file for details. If you have
Firewall router, configure that correctly and then you can turn off the
firewall on your Mac.
Also, there are no viruses in the wild that can attack Mac OS X.
Word macro viruses can attack Windows machines, and can be forwarded
from Macs. Therefore, it is good practice not to forward any Word files
that contain macros.
