All right, thanks to both of you for your diplomacy in pointing out my
ignorance. I bought this computer used, and it's my first experience
with OSX. I assumed, wrongly I see, that "News" was sort of like "Mail."
Funny that I never consciously noticed it was MT-NewsWatcher.

So now, should I download and reinstall, or abandon this for a better
reader? I'm not overly concerned about bells and whistles and am
satisfied with the user interface, other than these recent bugs.

You're using MT-NewsWatcher 3.4. The current version (which I'm using)
is 3.5.2. You can get it at <http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/>.

As Tim pointed out, you can check what version you have by going to the
application menu (the one with the name of the app you're in; it's
always between the Apple and File menus) and choosing About ___. And
some apps, including MT-NewsWatcher, have a link to their website under
the Help menu.

Now, about the problems you've been having...

"New" messages that are several days old: Probably just means they took
several days to reach your news server. It takes time for messages to
be relayed from one server to the next, and sometimes a misbehaving
server or a bad connection means that some servers won't receive the
message until several hours or days after it was sent.

Groups that show 57 unread messages, but when you open it there are only
20 messages: The first number is just an estimate, based on a quick
check of the server. If you want it to show you an accurate count, go
to Special -> News Servers -> Other Options and check 'Use accurate (but
slow) article counts'. It'll take longer for MT-NW to get the message
counts, but it'll be more accurate. (BTW, this is answered in the FAQ
on the MT-NW web site.)

Headers sometimes displayed in a strange font: That happens when one of
the messages was posted with a Subject encoded in a different character
set, for example Greek. When that happens, MT-NW displays *all* the
subjects in that window using the font you chose for that character set.
You can mostly fix it by going to Preferences - Fonts, and setting it to
use the same font & size for all languages: Choose a language from the
first popup, then choose a font & size to use for that language. Repeat
for every language in that meny.

Thanks for the detailed response. Sounds like I can fix issues # 2 and 3
easily enough with that info.

To clarify my main concern, what I mean is that it reloads, as new,
articles I know I've already read. (So on Wednesday, it'll load ten
articles from Monday and six from Tuesday that I've already read.)

I'm holding off for the moment on "upgrading" to 3.5.2, but did just
trash my preference file, so I'll see whether that helps with the first
issue.

Thanks to all respondents; I'll post a follow-up in a few days whether
it's thumbs up or down.
