I'm on a MacBook Pro, and the ONLY keys that have an icon on them
(except for the F keys) are the "Command" key (which doesn't, and has
NEVER, had the word "Command" on it) and the Eject key (which also
doesn't have a word on it)

Then I am mistaken and I beg your pardon. I have a Scandinavian
keyboard, and like most European keyboards it has always had the Alt
icon (looks like a railway sidetracking or something like that), the
text "Alt" is a relative newcomer. It has a bent arrow on the Return key
with no text, a ^ with a horizontal line over it for Enter, and a hollow
arrow pointing up for Shift. The only modifier keys that don't have
icons on them are fn, Ctrl and Esc.
