The Esc Character.




Hello,

If I click on the blue Apple Symbol in the top left hand corner of the GUI I see that on the drop down menu one can
Force Quit an application by pressing three keys. After much checking I now discover recently that the third key in that
sequence is the Esc key located at the top left hand end of my Mac keyboard. I thought you might find this interesting.
I began to get messages in my inbox from where I wasn't sure that my inbox quota was exceeded and sure enough when I
tried sending emails with say graphics to myself I would get this alert.
I then tried Mac help for the Mac email client that I use with effectivity to find the article I copy and paste below.
So in Mail I clicked on the symbol beside the plus symbol in the left hand corner of the Mail GUI that looks like a gear
wheel and clicked on Get Info on the pop up menu. When you do this you will see a window with Messages On Server from
where I selected all of the messages and then clicked on Remove From Server. All of the messages were removed and I
started again with a empty 10Mb sized inbox.
This is a first for me to interact with a server at this level. Brilliant!
I also discover there are all kinds of great widgets available like two I downloaded that are a countdown timer and a
metronome that I use in conjunction with a free typing course I'm using to learn at last how to type. See:

I'm sure you already know all about how to find widgets by just typing in widget and what you want to do.

My mailbox is over its quota
If you receive a message from your email provider that your mailbox has grown too large, check your available space and
try deleting some messages to make room for new messages. It is common for email accounts to limit how much email can be
stored on the server.
The Account Info window, which you open from the Action pop-up menu located below your list of mailboxes, helps you
manage your email when you've exceeded your account's storage limits.
1. Choose Get Info from the Action pop-up menu.
2. Choose the account you want to manage from the Account pop-up menu.
3. Click either Quota Limits (for a .Mac or IMAP account) or "Messages on Server" (for a POP account).
4. View messages.
5. For a POP account, select which messages you want to view using the Show Messages pop-up menu. Then click the Size
header to view messages in order of size. You can free up space on the server more quickly by deleting the largest
messages first.
6. For .Mac or IMAP accounts, click the Size header to find the largest mail folders on your server. Select a
mailbox, then click Show Messages. Click Size in the viewer window, then select messages and press the Delete key to
remove the messages.

Most mail providers also let you manage your email accounts from a web browser. To manage your .Mac account, go to
webmail.mac.com, sign in, and choose Show All Folders from the Go To pop-up menu. The Email Storage meter shows your
total space allotted, and how much you have used.
Try these strategies to free space in your email account:
? Delete large messages or messages with attachments (first save any attachments you want to keep). To see if
messages have attachments, choose View > Columns > Attachments. To see the size of each message, choose View > Columns >
Size. To quickly identify large messages to delete, click the Size column heading to sort the messages by size.
? For .Mac or IMAP accounts, make sure your Trash mailbox is empty. Messages you've recently deleted are in the
Trash mailbox, but haven't yet been removed from the mail server. Choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Messages to remove the
messages.
? For .Mac or IMAP accounts, move some of your messages from the server to mailboxes on your computer. Choose
Mailbox > New Mailbox, then choose On My Mac from the Location pop-up menu in the dialog that appears. Name the mailbox.
Next, click your Inbox, select the messages you want to put in the new mailbox, and drag them to the new mailbox you
created. The messages are copied from the mail server to your hard disk and then deleted from the server.
? Once you have downloaded attachments from email messages in your .Mac or IMAP accounts, you have a copy of the
attachments on your computer. To make more space available on the server, you can remove the attachments from the
server. Select a message with attachments you want to remove and choose Message > Remove Attachments.
? For POP accounts, change how long messages are kept on the server after you retrieve them. Choose Mail >
Preferences and click Accounts. Select the account, then click the Advanced pane and choose a time interval for removing
messages from the server.
? For .Mac or IMAP accounts, messages in the Drafts, Trash, Sent, and Junk mailboxes are stored on the server by
default. To free server space, delete the messages or move them to mailboxes on your computer. You can also change the
preference for these mailboxes so that future messages are not stored on the server; note that any messages in the
mailboxes at the time you change the preference will remain on the server until you delete them or move them to your
computer. To change the preference, choose Mail > Preferences and click Accounts. Select a .Mac or IMAP account, click
Mailbox Behaviors, and change the option for storing messages on the server. To learn if a mailbox is stored on the
server or your computer, place your pointer over the mailbox. 
? Delete messages from your Sent mailbox if you store sent mail on the server.
? Use iChat or iDisk, not email, to transfer large files. For information on sending files in a chat, open iChat and
choose Help > iChat Help.
