I'm trying to get a remote XWindows session going on my Mac OS X 10.4.8
box talking to Mandriva Linux 2007 Free on a remote box, so that I can
use Xnews (Windows news-reader) running under wine on the remote.
Can anyone please give me some pointers? I thought I'd ask here before
I take this to a Linux 'group (BTW, I'm far from proficient on the
terminal). Here's a copy of what I've just written elsewhere:-

I've since decided to re-install my messy Linux set-up from scratch now
that I've settled on Mandriva as my distro (it was dual-booting with
Kubuntu). I'll be setting XNews up again from scratch once I've got the
new Mandriva going properly.
Next question [somewhat OT]: Although VNC does work I've found it to
be rather too slow to be useful for serious news-reading. I think I
read earlier that you're using some sort of remote XWindows set-up
from your Mac OS X box to your Linux box. As I'm totally new to all
this, could you please give me any pointers as to which apps to use
on both boxes to get a remote graphical set-up? I can now succesfully
ssh from Mac to Linux (yay!) but it isn't graphical.

I've just found X11 on the Mac OS X box and can ssh to the Linux box
in the MacOS X11 terminal, am I on the right lines? How should I get
a graphical Linux session going (I'm using KDE on Mandriva) from the
X11 terminal? I've tried startkde and get:-
---------[X11 terminal]--------
[snipe@Scolopax ~]$ startkde
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
xmodmap: unable to open display ''
xmodmap: unable to open display ''
startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
ERROR: Couldn't attach to DCOP server!
startkde: Shutting down...
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.
[snipe@Scolopax ~]$
------[end X11 terminal]-------
Groping in the dark here, TIA for any help.
Start MacOSX X11.
An xterm should appear. From this xterm:
ssh -Y Mandriva.linux.box.address
The terminal session this starts on your Mandriva box should have
DISPLAY set so that any X-Windows applications you start from this
terminal session will send their display back to the Mac (this is
the function of the -Y).
NOTE: I use this approach all the time with Redhat Linux. In
some cases the Redhat box is 2000 miles away (company has a very
Fat Network Pipe).
