Figured I would grab any Windows PC at first, until I learned moreThat sounds fair enough, Mark. :-) And if you want to work in IT
about Windows hardware and software in general.
there'll be a lot more employment for you in Windows (more clients
having trouble and more time needed to fix up the trouble).
One of my sisters has a Windows box running XP Pro. Our nephew is a
computer programmer so he gets everything at a good price. I have no
idea what brand it is. I asked her about the processor speed and the
RAM but she had no idea and didn't know how to find out. So I found out
myself simply by investigating the machine. It runs at something like
447. I used it only for surfing and email and at least she had a decent
phone line. My only problem was when writing a long email I tend to
command-s a lot (a habit from the days of the MacPlus). Try the same
move on a PC running XP and it sends the unfinished email for you! It
was worse than when I borrowed someone else's car (a Volvo) and the
brakes "snatched" (I had to learn to use them VERY gently) while the
indicators and windscreen wipers were switched.
Bought a few books about Windows XP Pro today, going to buy a few moreI had no trouble with XP on my sister's machine. I think my main
books tomorrow.
problem would be with keyboard commands. I won't use the mouse if I
don't have to. I'm really miffed at Apple because they never adopted
the feature in Action Utilities that allows you to create your own
commands for all sorts of things. I use Keyboard Maestro but it doesn't
allow me to create or change commands in applications. For instance,
command-l was ALWAYS the shortcut for spelling until some idiot changed
it. But at least I can open all my applications using keyboard commands
and do a few other things (e.g., shut down, restart).
I have been fairly lucky regarding breakdowns, not many here. The PowerCurve was the only breakdown I've had so far. I was told (when
I described everything that was happening to a techie, over the phone)
that it sounded like the logic board and was quoted $600 to fix it.
Since that was more than the machine was worth, even working, I opted
for a second-hand 9500 120, upgraded to 185. I still have it and it
still works. Even my PowerBook 150 still works (well it did last time I
booted it, which was some time ago) though the battery is long dead.
