Google suggests http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2002/11/19/mac_pc.html

not entirely off base -
but for simple file sharing entirely overkill.

try this for simplicity:

PC -
-- Start -> settings -> system -> Computer name (identification?) -> Workgroup

-- set a workgroup name that you like - say 'My_Computers'

-- restart

Mac -
-- system preferences -> sharing. Turn on 'Windows Sharing'
-- applications -> utilities -> directory access
-- authenticate (enter you administrator user name and password)
-- select 'SMB', and click 'configure'.
-- enter the workgroup name you entered on your PC (above that would be 'My_Computers') no quotes
-- click 'OK
-- quit.

Connecting

From Mac
-- from the finder, (keystroke) shift + command (apple) + K, or
Go menu -> network, or the network icon from the sidebar
-- you should see the workgroup 'My_Computers'
-- double click on it, you should see your PC
-- double click on it, Enter your username and password for the PC

From PC
-- double click on 'Network places'
- this part sometimes varies -
-- sometimes you will see other computers in your workgroup automagically
-- sometimes you will need to double click on the workgroup name

-- once you see your Mac, double click, enter your username and password.
