First off- just wanted to thank you and Bob for your lengthy and
knowledgable answers. It's good to see this group has people that
actually want to help and not just curse at those who are dissapointed
for legitimate reasons.
Well of course I installed the Canon software, And also Adobe CS,
NeoOffice, Skype, Adium, and some widgets.
To answer also some of Bob's questions, the iChat thing could be a
firewall problem. I will try to play with it, but the problem is that
it's not a local issue. When I try to resolve it I need someone on the
other side at least as patient as I am (which is not much), and I
rarely can find the time that both of us are available. I can work on
it through the night, but who would stay awake to test all the
variations of firewall/router etc.
As for the camera issue, I "resolved" it like you usually resolve
things with Microsoft... I went back to using iPhoto to upload my
files, and then I use the Canon software to copy the uploaded originals
from the iPhoto library. It's stupid, but hey, somebody here already
said I'm an idiot.
Your apps sound fine -- I just wanted to root out any conflicting device
drivers -- it doesn't sound like you have any.
In your other post you said you'd check your router. As I remember, I
have found it difficult to do even audio chatting through my home
firewall because it would require me to open tons and tons of UDP ports
which I really don't want exposed. Your ISP may have a similar thing
going. This article might be a start for configuring ports:

Oops, already linked in another post. Oh well -- I'll keep it here for
emphasis.
My guess is the Mac firewall is not what's getting in your way. Did
someone suggest ethereal? That might help find out what the ports the
Mac is trying to talk to. Then you'd have to ask the guy on the OTHER
end to open up a bunch of UDP ports...
Once I figured out how much I'd be exposed if I did that, I just bought
more cell phone minutes. :-)
Re the still camera...
iPhoto talks to it OK and the Canon-supplied software doesn't? I just
find that kind of humorous. That's not a reason to HATE the Mac, that's
a reason to LOVE it. Apple appears to do better than the manufacturers
do with their own equipment.

There is a certain amount of assimilation that you have to undergo in
the switch. Having used a lot of different kinds of computers, I find
that once you get past the natural resistance to "you must do it this
way", you find out that Apple's way is usually pretty good. They
actually design software around the USER, whereas Microsoft designs
software around its FEATURES. Hence when Microsoft has you do things,
many times it is so convoluted that you get a rush after just having
figured it out. "I like hitting my head against the wall because it
feels so good when I stop." I have a business to run. I don't have time
to navigate Microsoft's mazes.
As for some other responses you've gotten -- I think some guys try to
calibrate frustrated posters to see if they're seriously having a
problem or if they're just trolls. Just don't sound like a troll or
take any troll bait and you'll be fine. I've found the Mac ng's to have
the best signal-to-noise ratio by far -- you will almost always end up
getting some sort of help.

Good luck. I'd love to help you out more with your iSight issues but I
haven't ordered my MacBook Pro yet. Soon...
