I'm not sure exactly what your question is, so I'll just take a guess.
First, here's some more information on that machine:

http://www.lowendmac.com/imacs/2001-500.html (North American)
http://www.lowendmac.com/imacs/2001-int.html (International)

Your machine could be either of the two.

Running OS 9, it will probably run fine just the way it is. You'll
only need a bigger hard drive if you're planning on storing a lot of
video, music, etc., on it. For that purpose, you might consider an
external firewire hard drive, as that won't involve disassembling the
machine. That's probably the route I'd take, leaving the internal
drive for the operating system and applications.

If you want to do that, you have lots of options. For example, LaCie
has an external Firewire 160GB drive, used, for $95 with a 90-day
warranty:

A new one would be about $130. You can probably do it a little less if
you wanted to buy an enclosure ($25-40) plus the bare hard drive of
your choice.

As for RAM for that Mac, you're going to need more if you plan to run
OS X on it. (192 MB will be excruciatingly slow even for 10.3, and
below the minimum for 10.4.) That iMac will handle up to 1GB of RAM,
and accepts two PC100 modules. Right now, it has a 128MB module and a
64MB module, for your current totaly of 192.

A reasonable upgrade would be to replace the 64 with a 512MB module,
for a total of 640 MB; that will run even 10.4 fairly well, although
I'd recommend sticking to 10.3.9 on that Mac for speed reasons. 10.4
is a little more demanding.

RamJet has a 512MB module for $109:

Crucial has a better deal right now, at $87.54. I don't believe a
direct link will work on this, but go here and click your way to an
iMac G3-500 to find the module:

Hope that answers your question.
