I have a Netgear DG834 wirelss router which works fine - wired - to my
old iMac and my wife's wireless PC laptop and my son's old ibook. I
decided to activate the security features in the router - using WEP, 64
bit - I don't want hyper security!
All works - except the airport stuff on the iBook.
It picks up the network but I what password do i give it? 40bit hex or
ASCII or 128 HEX or ASCII - and what is LEAP?
Any help gratefully recieved!
Check the router's manual, but usually the password is exactly the same
as whatever you put into the password space in the router config window.
I'm not familiar with the Netgear interface. Some of the more advanced
allow you to enter hex _or_ ASCII (the router then does the conversion
to hex).
Event though you don't want much security, please check the 'Don't
broadcast wireless network name' box wherever it is in the router config
windows. Also change the name of the network and its admin password from
the factory defaults. These steps are _very_ easy and help increase
security substantially, though not nearly so much as switching to WPA
and using MAC number matching would if used in addition.
