i have a powerbook g4 with a 15" apple monitor and wireless mouse and keyboard, a very nice setup.
now that I have started looking at tv shows, "trailer park boys," etc. on my computer, it seems like it would be nice to have a bigger nicer screen as the external monitor for my laptop.
the Sharp LC26DA5U 26" AQUOS LCD TV for about $1000 seems like a winner, except that i have no idea what is involved in hooking it up to the laptop. in other words, if it or some other similar monitor is seamlessly trouble free, then i want it. otherwise my apple 15" monitor gives a beautiful picture.
grateful for anyone's experience and advice with this issue.
oh yes, the new device should have hdtv tuner included or easily added. or do one thing at a time and do it well? forget about hdtv tuner? Naw. then i will have no new technology for all that expense.
many thanks, John
Different TVs give different results. Some work fine with DVI, some only with VGA. Some only show 4X3 even on a widescreen. Some have too much overscan. Some have non-square pixels, so distort the picture. Some require interlaced scan, or a frequency that the computer won't generate. Since you have a laptop, take it to the TV store and try any set you are considering, before buying. Sometimes there is a page in the TV's instruction book that mentions what computer interfaces will work. If the set has no DVI, but has HDMI, you can try a DVI to HDMI cable to connect the computer.
A HDTV tuner is handy if you have any reasonably strong signals in your area, as you may be able to avoid paying for cable or satellite TV.
If you plan on ever getting a HD or Blu-Ray player, be sure the set has HDMI, else you will not be able to get the full resolution from the player.
