I'm also using an F5U220 (in a QuickSilver-2002 PowerMac G4). Sleep
seems to work fine for me.
At least it sleeps when I push the power button. (The power-usage meter
on my UPS drops to almost nothing when the computer goes to sleep, so I
think it's safe to assume that it really is asleep.)
