avi and wmv files don't play properly with VLC (using OS X 10.2.9)

I'm using a Mac G4 with OS X 10.2.9, and I've installed Quicktime 6.5.3 and VLC 0.8.4a. I want to play movie files with .avi and .wmv extensions. Quicktime doesn't play them. VLC plays them but I get a double image (two identical frames side by side, and both frames are compressed sideways) and the colors are completely off. The same movie files play fine with VLC under Linux (Debian 3.1). What's wrong?
