TOPIC: USB 2.0 PCI cards for older Mac desktops
I just bought for Christmas for my daughter a 5th gen iPod Video 30GB.
No it does not come with a firewire>dock cable only a USB 2.0 > dock
cable. It does not come with a charger either (that $$ extra as is the
firewire cable>dock). 5th gen is very nice better display color etc.
I have a 4th gen iPod 20Gb and I can use the firewire>dock cable with
the charger (from my 4th gen) and charge the new 5th gen iPod Video. It
can also charge from a computer USB 2.0 connection via the USB 2.0
cable>dock.
I was in the same boat (my music library is on a G4 933 which has only
USB 1.1 with the new iPod Video which would not sync via firewire.
I bought a IOGear 5 port GIC251U USB 2.0 PCI card @$22 from OWC for it.
Works to sync the iPod Video and my 4th Gen iPod too.
My G4 will SLEEP/WAKE correctly with nothing connected to the IOGear USB
2.0 card.
BUT with an iPod connected (either mounted or ejected but connected via
USB 2.0 IOGear card) it will on manual SLEEP attempt the display blanks
and G4 does not SLEEP (hard drives still spin fans run, POWER light does
not blink). WORSE the G4 won't WAKE. FORCED reboot is only way out.
NUTS.
Exploring XLR8yourmac & google, it seems ALL USB 2.0 cards suffer this
fate some worse than others. At least the IOGear will SLEEP/WAKE
correctly if nothing connected.
I am not particularly a happy camper over this. I experimented and even
connecting my HP Photosmart printer does the same screwup connected via
the IOGear USB 2.0 card, SLEEP results in no SLEEP and won't WAKE
requiring same FORCED reboot.
It seems to be a bug in PCI drivers/hardware and or Apple OSX as it
SLEEPS the PCI bus and won't respond to WAKE.
I am going to keep the IOGear card as it will work with the iPod Video
but can't keep it (or anything else other than an old TurboBall
Kensington trackball) connected to the IOGear card if I want to SLEEP my
G4. Guess I will have to make sure iPod is disconnected before
attempting SLEEP.
Good luck finding a USB 2.0 PCI card that allows SLEEP.
