That probably means your computer has USB 1.1, not USB 2.0. USB 2 is
much faster, but it didn't get added to Macs until somewhat recently so
older models (such as the titanium PowerBook on which I'm typing this)
don't have it.

If you have a desktop Mac, you should be able to get a USB 2.0 card for
not too much money. I think you can do the same for a laptop via a PC
card slot, but that's probably a bit more expensive.
