As I understand it, the 5th generatio iPods just didn't have the space for
the relatively bulky Firewire chipset. Thus, they only have USB 2.0. I've
seen a picture that shows what happens if you try to use a Firewire cable:
you get a screen that says "This iPod does not support Firewire. Please plug
in a USB cable." (Or words to that effect.)
