Firewire on new iPods?

Hello all, Christmas has replaced my stolen 3rd Generation iPod with a 5th Gen. Photo. Is there any reason why I couldn't use the Firewire cord from the old model with the new one?
When I read that the new ones were using USB, I figured that the dock connectors were all new, but as I just found out, they're not - they just don't come with Firewire anymore.
So are the new iPods not set up to handle the Firewire interface? Will it hurt it to use the old ones? It seems odd to go backwards to USB.
Thank you .
