Odd thing in iPhoto

When I drop a .nef file from iPhoto to the GIMP the Gimp plugin ufraw starts and allows me to process the picture. However, if I double click the nef file in iPhoto GIMP starts up with a jpeg. i presume that this means that in the former case, iPhoto is doing a conversion of the nef to a jpg.

Question is how do I stop it?
