Your mileage will vary by quite a lot. The set of people you talk to is
obviously limitted. I'm quite sure there are lots of people like that; I
know some of them. There are also a *LOT* of people for whom the mini as
it is is an excellent match. I also know some of them. There's my
mother-in-law, for example. I bought a mini for her (to replace an old
Windows 98 box), and it fits her needs great. If you asked her about
whether she wanted to add a card or two, she'd probably think you were
talking about card games. And she'd have no idea what you were talking
about if you mentioned RAM or 7200 rpm disk drives. Oh, and if it was
much bigger, it wouldn't fit where it is now stashed. She's also a quite
nice and intelligent woman - but she's not a computer geek.

Just because you happen to know people with some particular set of
desires, that doesn't mean that is a very good survey of the market as a
whole. Indeed, it is evident to me that you are talking about a *FAR*
smaller fraction of the market than people like my mother-in-law
represent. I don't have to do a lot of marketting research to figure
that one out.

Sure, the segment you are talking about exists. It is probably even a
market segment that I'm much closer to being in myself. But I am capable
of seeing beyond my own desires and those of my like-minded friends.

I think that was the message Gregory was trying to say with his "I guess
the mini. Prove me wrong." It takes a lot more work than asking a few
friends (or debating on usenet) to do a serious job of evaluating market
potential. Those people who are actually good at it (that for sure would
not include me) tend to go out and make money on it instead of arguing
on usenet.
