OS X-Establishing Ownership And Privileges!

I am frustrated at the frequency I get the message that
I don't have sufficient privileges or don't have ownership
of a file when no one else ever has used my G-4. I've
repeatedly used "get information" to establish ownership
on my hard drive, then on a folder, and finally, in
desperation, on a particular file, so I can take an action
such as renaming or trashing it.

What can I do to solve this? Surely there is a way....
