The 2.5GHz models may be available via refurbished equipment (that is
how I got mine). But as far as I know, the current models are 2GHz,
2.3GHz and 2.7GHz

And the prime differences between the 2GHz and the other 2 is the
maximum amount of memory, and faster PCI bus (if you are into that sort
of thing). As CPU speed goes up so does the front side bus, and they
tweak other options as you go up in price.

If you are spending most of your time reading, thinking and editing
text, your system will be very quiet most of the time.

I really do mostly that sort of thing. I doing email, web, reading PDF
files, editing text (source code), ssh logged into other systems, etc...
I may have 10 to 15 apps open at once and switching between them a lot,
but for the most part when an app is not front and center, it is mostly
idle.

I do have 2.5GB of memory installed so that having all those apps, I do
not page and swap very much, and it makes switching between apps faster.

If I was doing graphics related work, then I would be considering add
more memory as graphics stuff loves lots of memory. But my graphics
work is limited to maybe tweaking a family picture from time to time, or
maybe creating an iChat buddy picture. Not very demanding at all.

I can get the fans blowing very nicely if I bring up maps.google.com,
switch to satellite images and then use the arrow keys to make the
scroll as fast as possible. That gets thing hopping. And its fun to
look at :-)
