Plugging a visiting Mac into my network

Indeed - DHCP was doing SOMETHING but what exactly wasn't clear

I used that and it worked beautifully.

She has been warned.

In fact her university IT people had set up her machine to work on their
system and she sort of remembered some of what they did as I followed your
advice. She will go and talk to them on her return.
