eMac not booting

I have issues. I hope this forum is the appropriate place. If not, could someone suggest where else to ask?
When starting up I get to the gray apple, and the spinning bars... and that's it. It will not boot from system disk in external USB CD drive. (internal drive is hosed) Held down option key at start up - it saw my eMac, and it eventually saw the CD drive with the start-up disk, chose the CD drive... then got the circle w/line symbol, and it wouldn't start up.
When starting in verbose mode, it hangs up with this info:
Creating RAM Disk for syslogd
h***: attach failed: error e00002f0
syslogd: cannot create /var/run/syslog: Read-only file system
syslogd: child pid 103 exited with return code 1
Creating RAM Disk for Crashreporter
h***: attach failed: error e00002f0
Launching Crash Reporter
Jul 21 01:37:43 com.apple.SecurityServer: database /var/db/CodeEquivalenceDatabase opened READONLY (R/W failed errno=30)
Jul 21 01:37:43 com.apple.SecurityServer: error writing entropy file /var/db/SystemEntropyCache
Jul 21 01:37:43 com.apple.SecurityServer: Entering service
and there she sits.
when start up in single user mode and /sbin/fsck -fy it checks everything and reports that the volume eMac appears to be OK.
it's not.
Any ideas???
