Try scanning at 300 dpi and make certain it is using gray scale, not
color for the scan. That should be enough resolution to get almost
any detail present in the original scan.

How much free space on your hard drive? The insufficient memory may
mean that there was not enough space to create the temporary print file
or create a large enough swap file to run.
As for the memory installed in your iMac. The slot with the 512 MB in
it will not take a larger size RAM SO-DIMM, so you can not increase
your amount of RAM by exchanging it for a larger one. The 'sealed'
slot can take up to a 512 MB PC133 DIMM, giving a max of 1 GB. But,
you will need to either have it done by a technician or find a manual
on how to take the iMac apart and reassemble it properly. This takes
care because you will be separating the case and in the process you
will need to reassemble correctly and renew the heat transfer from the
CPU to its heatsink plate. If not done right, you will burn up the
CPU.

If the application is running under Classic to print, then the above
will apply. Otherwise it has no bearing on memory usage by a OS X
application.
