I guess "disc" was a bad choice of wording on my part. I apoligize. This
thing has 2 operating systems on it....a 10.3.4 and a OS 9. I was using the
OS 10.3.4 with no problems. I switched over to the OS 9 from the OS 10.3.4.
Apparently the OS 9 isn't working and I haven't been able to switch back to
the good one.

there was no 9.5.
(start-up disc, I guess?) and now nothing works. It boots to an icon looking
like a 3.5 floopy disc, with a question mark blinking inside it.
that means it can't find a bootable system on either the hard drive or
the optical drive (or any attached hard drives but you didn't mention
additional drives).
I can hear a
clicking sound and after a few minutes, the computer shuts down. I have tried
all the shortcuts that I can find and still nothing as far as getting it to
complete the boot. I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance!
that sounds like the computer works, but whatever system disc you have
in there is not compatible with it. for instance, it's possible that
the disc you have was bundled with a different model mac. or, the
optical drive is defective.
what exactly does it say on the disc?
also, why did you switch? especially since you say you don't have any
discs that came with it.

iBook, M6497, made in 2001. color is white. I believe this is a G3? I am not
that familiar with ibooks and I don't have any discs that originally came
with the unit.
google shows that it's an ibook 600mz g3.
