PowerBook3400 boot problem

My trusty ol' PB3400 is finally starting to act up.
All of a suddden it failed to boot up completely.

When I hit the power button it 'clicks' and the HD spins up,
but I get no chime and the screen remains black.
I tried resetting the PRAM and PowerManager
a la instructions in the user's manual but no luck.

Could it be the PRAM battery or something else?
Anyone remember enough about this baby?
