What happens when I insert the floppy into the Mac disk drive is that I

Does the drive recognize HD floppies when connected to a PC rather than
a Mac?
Yes, everything worked fine with both HD and DD disks when connected to
a PC. That got me thinking and I realized that I had connected the drive
to the PC directly to one of its USB ports, while to the Mac I had it
via a USB hub.
So I once again connected it to my Powerbook, but this time directly to
a USB port. Worked perfectly with HD disks!
Who would have thought a hub would make such a difference.
