Would plugging one USB Hub into another USB Hub and then plugging into a
USB port on my iMac cause any problems, both are powered?

Fine as far as compatibility is concerned.

USB supports a maximum of 127 devices per bus, and the only way to
achieve that is to have hubs plugged into hubs.

Maybe, maybe not. :-)

According to the latest issue of the UK magazine MacFormat, Havard
postgraduate student Gonglue Jiang has come up with "InfiniteUSB" plugs /
cables that can piggy-back each other - you plug one into the computer,
then plug another into the back of the first, another into the back of the
second, etc. Technically I guess you could say each plug is a single port
hub. The only snag here is that he has yet to find a manufacturer for it.

BUT, I admit that it is unlikely to be able to use these to get 127
devices all plugged in at once - even if the original USB port had enough
power, 127 piggy-back plugs would be a rather "unwieldy" length.
