Hi. I just ordered an Ipod Nano which I should receive next week. I did
look at the manual, though, and it says that "The USB port on most
keyboards doesn't provide enough power. Connect
iPod nano to a USB 2.0 port on your computer."
I have a 24" IMac from 2007 that has a 2.4Ghz processor with a keyboard
that has USB 2.0 ports. Should the USB ports of my keyboard be powerful
enough to connect to the Nano?
No. The problem is that the USB ports on the keyboard don't have
sufficient current output to power an iPod nano.
A USB port on a computer can supply a maximum of 500 mA. The keyboard
uses some of that power to operate the keyboard, and it only passes 100
mA to each of the USB ports on the keyboard.
You would need a hub with its own power supply, or plug the iPod
directly into the computer.
Is the warning only for keyboards with USB 1 ports?
No. USB 1 and USB 2 just refer to the speed at which data can be
transferred through the port. They both supply the same amount of power
to connected devices.
Or is there a difference in power between the USB 2 ports on my keyboard
and the USB 2 ports on the back of my IMac?
Yes.
I have used the USB port on keyboard to connect and Epson printer and it
worked fine. I also connected an IPod Shuffle with no problems.
You may have been lucky with the Shuffle. It probably wouldn't have
charged reliably (or as fast as normal), but would probably be able to
communicate as long as the battery wasn't too flat. A Nano needs more
power than a Shuffle.
The Epson printer is no problem - it has its own power cable, so doesn't
need to get power from the USB port.
