You use theirs unless they are charging you a rental fee and allow
you to purchase your own to avoid the fee.

As long as it has an ethernet connection, then it is a matter of
what the cable company wants attached to their system. The
ethernet port side is generic IP networking traffic.
As a side note. If the cable modem provided by your cable company
is a simple modem, then you may also want to look at getting an
inexpensive Cable/DSL Router to put between your cable modem and
your Mac. This will allow you to share your broadband connection
with multiple systems at home, and the Cable/DSL router will act
as a first line of defense against internet nasties.
<http://dealmac.com> is a good place to search for cheap Cable/DSL
routers.

Huh? You get to provide your own cable as in cable TV cable to
the utility pole? Strange. Anyway, this is a matter between you
and the cable company. It really isn't anything related to the
Mac. Or you may want to talk to an electrician.

Mostly if you have to log in using PPPoE. If so, what is your
account name, and password.
Also do they record the Media Access Control address (MAC). If
so, then if you change the device talking to the cable modem, you
will have to call them up to get them to change the recorded MAC
address.
