Hi all,
I'm trying to set up a home network at my parents place and they have a
high speed DSL Internet connection.
Here's the computers they have...
Power Macintosh G3 Desktop (Mac OS 9.2.2)
PowerBook G3 Wallstreet II (Mac OS 9.2.2)
Power Macintosh 6100/66av (Mac OS 9.1)
currently they have a Siemens SpeedStream DSL modem hooked directly to the
PowerBook G3 for Internet access.
I want to network all three of their computers together, with the option
to add a couple of more computers to the same network from time to time,
but also be able to have all computers capable of accessing the DSL
broadband modem.
I'm thinking of a wired network (actual ethernet cable "drops" to each
computer location).
What sort of broadband router/ethernet router do you recommend?
Any router will work. Just get one which has the semi-standard 4-port switch
built in. (That's 4 ports for the _local_ network plus one for the WAN
connection.) The _only_ router on the market that I can think of that does
_not_ have a 4-port switch is Apple's AirPort series; the older ones have
only _one_ port, and the newer ones have _three_. Even so, as you only have
three machines to connect, a newer AirPort will work for you. And you can get
a five or an eight port switch for $20 or so, anyway.
Getting a wired-only router is cheaper than getting a wireless router, but
harder to do. Simply finding a wired-only router is getting harder and
harder. Cheap, low-end, 802.11g wireless routers abound; they usually ship
with wireless access turned off, so just don't turn it on.
Wired-only routers are available from the usual suspects: Linksys, Netgear,
Belkin, D-Link, and Zoom. In some cases you can get a router which combines a
DSL modem; Zoom in particular likes to do that.
I walked into a store the other day but felt overwhelmed with the
choices...I'm not even sure what to look for....all I know is that I plan
on making it a wired network (not wireless), and want all the computers in
the house to be able to access the DSL modem without unhooking ethernet
cables all the time.
