If the linksys is a wireless router, there's little or nothing to do in
order to get it to work.

If it is not a wireless router, you have a number of options.

If it is a combination router and Cable modem, you need to get a
wireless router and connect it as a bridge. If it is not a combination
and there is a separate cable modem, you can replace it with a wireless
router or you can still use a wireless router as a bridge.

Thanks for prompt reply.
My cable modem and router are separate.

I have ordered an Airport Extreme Base Station (the new one) and hope
it will serve my purposes. I am under pressure to have a birthday gift
in hand for tomorrow.

Since a cable runs from the Linksys router to the room in which I want
to operate the PowerBook G4 wirelessly, can I connect the Airport
Extreme to that cable and then operate the PowerBook G4 wirelessly?

Thanks again.
Don

Since you are getting an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), then
depending on whether is it one new flat/square model, then replace
teh Linksys router with the AEBS. It should do all the same
things that Linksys does.

NOTE: Some cable modems need to be power cycled before they will
recognize new device attached to it. In this case I'm assuming
you replace the Linksys with the AEBS.

If you have the flying saucer style AEBS, then you have one WAN
port for plugging into the cable modem, and one port for
connecting to another device.

In this case plug the WAN port into one of the Linksys ports.
Then using the Airport Admin Utility and set the configuration
setting to make the AEBS a bridge instead of a router. This may
be "Unchecking" the "Distribute IP addresses" setting, or it maybe
labeled "Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)". This depends on
whether you have the "Airport Admin Utility" or the "Airport
Utility".

Next when configuring your AEBS, you would prefer setting the
Wireless security to use the "WPA2 Personal", or anything that
says WPA (in case my wording does not agree with what you see).
